All of our rats were raised soy free and Emily is continuing that trend with our lines and her own lines as well. Below is the ingredient list for the soy free mix that we sell. Everything is mixed together, so all you have to do is just feed it. It comes in a vaccum sealed bag, 5 lbs, so as to ensure optimal freshness.
Ingredient list for the mix:
Hard Red Wheat, Spring Wheat, Barley, Millet, Thick rolled oats, buckwheat groats, rice, sunflower seeds, banana chips, dried
fruit medley (papaya, golden raisins, raisins, pineapple), pumpkin seeds, ground flax seed, wheat germ, walnuts,
dried carrots, dried tomatoes, Coconut flakes, Total cereal, nutritional yeast, almonds, pecans, dried peas and probiotics.
The reason why the food is sold in 5 lb increments is because it does make things easier for me.
My goal is to make the mix as healthy for all rodents as I can.
If you ever wonder how soy free breeding is done, as it is not common place, I have explained everything below.
This is how the soy free breeding works:
Generation 0 - Bred and raised on soy, but soy free before conception. These rats have quite a bit of soy in their systems.
Generation 1 - Bred soy free, but will have some traces of soy in their brains, passed on during pregnancy when the fat cells in the mother's body releases the soy and it crosses the placenta into the babies.
Generation 2 - These babies are bred and raised soy free. These babies should have no trace of soy in them what so ever. These rats, however, can have a serious reaction if exposed to soy in the future. It could crash their immune system and possibly lead to a fatal reaction if exposed to soy in the future. These babies have the potential to live 3-5 years.
Generation 3 - This is the beginning of a soy free line. Both parents will be have been soy free for at least 1 generation, the mother will have been soy free for 2 generations. There should be no trace of soy in either parent and this is where we will really start working with the genetics to make sure that we have no genetic issues in the line. These babies will have the potential to live 3-5 years.
Generation 4 - These babies will be a few generations into a line, so the breeder will know of any genetic issues and would be working to remove them from the line. They will also know if the parents of this line have any genetic issues to look out for. These babies have the potential to live 4-6 years. This is the ultimate goal of a soy free breeder and would take a couple of years to accomplish with a new line and responsible breeding practices.
