Safest Antibiotic you can use for your rats. Most vets will not prescribe amoxicillin, not because it is unsafe for rats, but because it is fatal to hamsters and most vets apply their knowledge of hamsters of guinea pigs to rats, not realizing how different the rat physiology is from hamsters and guinea pigs.
I sell amoxicillin capsules (which I obtain without a prescription, so this is not a prescription medication) for $1 per capsule. Each capsule is enough for 1 round of meds for 1 rat, no matter how big. It may be more than is needed if it is a small rat, or you medicate for less than 10 days. Amoxicillin is safe for babies, pregnant, nursing and elderly rats. The worst side effect that your rat will have is diarrhea, which will stop once the medication is complete. Baytril can cause stunted growth in babies, can kill babies of nursing rats and can cause miscarriage in pregnant rats, which is why I do not use it if at all possible.
The syringes I sell with the capsules are 1 ml, or 1cc. They are not needles, but strictly syringes. You will need to pick up Hershey's Strawberry Syrup and a small container to keep the mixed up meds in. THe capsules do not require special storage.
I will include an instruction sheet with all orders, detailing how to mix them, how to store them and how to figure out dosage for your own rats.
If you do not need the meds shipped by Priority mail, please include this in the notes and, after shipping, I will refund the excess shipping fee as I have the shipping set up as Priority Mail shipping, $5 flat rate to anywhere in the country. I ship all orders for the amoxicillin within 1 business day of the order being placed. By purchasing a subscription, you don't have to worry about trips to the pet store to pick up supplies and no impulse buying. I don't know about you, but I am a horrible impulse shopper and having something like this set up for me would help tremendously to stick to my own budget.
You are not limited to just monthly subscriptions, however. You also can make 1 time purchases as well. I will be adding cages and other rat accessories in the near future, but I wanted to get this started so those who wish to help an support our efforts have the option to do so.
The food I offer for sale is Brown's Tropical Carnival Rat and Mouse mix. It is a high end rat food that has minimal corn and uses no soy. There has been some research that has shown that Genetically Modified Soy can be bad news for rats. It can stunt their growth, cause failure to thrive in babies and even cause death. It has also been related to some forms of cancers in rats as well. Brown's Tropcal Carnival, however, uses no soy in their food, so I feel that it is safest for my rats and would recommend it. If, however, you have a rat who is a picky eater and you have issues with feeding them a mix, then I also sell Harlan Teklab lab blocks (2018) as well.
If you have never heard Of Harlan Teklab, it may be because it is not commercially available. Harlan is a manufacturer of lab animal diets and the Harlan Teklab rodent blocks is the BEST on the market. It is a complete diet in pellet form. The added bonus is that rats like the taste of it. So if you have rats that are picky eaters, you can use the Harlan as a main diet and use the Brown's for treats. Because of the fact that I deal with both males and females, and I breed, I keep my different rats on different diets. Too high of protein in a rat's diet can cause them to itch, which can cause sores, which some may mistake for mites, including some vets, if they are not aware of the protein issue that some rats can have. So, for my picky eaters, they will get the Harlan as their main diet, with the Brown's kept to a minimum in their cage for a treat. For those who are less picky, I offer them a diet of both the Brown's and the Harlan blocks.
