Social Rats for a Social world

Last update  7/7/10

Gender and number

Even though I do not currently have pics of girls up here, I do have plenty available. I have been very busy as of lately and have honestly not had time to get pics up. In addition to caring for more than 100 rats (I kid you not) I also have a 2 year old that I have to chase and a house and hubby to care for. I have 19 cages in use as of this update. 4 cages of adoptable girls and 3 cages of adoptable boys. There are plenty of chose from if you are looking. If you are looking for something in particular, just drop me an email and ask at tami@socialrats.com.

You can also follow Social Rats Adoption and Rescue on Facebook at  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Social-Rats-Adoption-and-Rescue/132043696821961

We have quite a few adults, mostly girls at the moment.  Most are rescue litters, but will be raised by us, on a soy free diet, so should be just as social and healthy as our own lines. We also have plenty of babies available as well.

These are some of the rats we still have up for adoption that were born and raised from our own rats.

These are some if our rescues (some, not all):

I am working on developing my own lines. I am also working on figuring out my speciality as well. I love the look of the dumbos, so working on adding dumbo to all of my lines. I am working on a couple of verigated lines, in black, tan and fawn. I am also working on developing a line of blues, which I was having issues with my original breeding pair of them, so having to start from scratch again with my blues. I will be breeding my first blue litter in June, 3 week gestation, be born around the beginning on July, will be ready to go home around mid August.

At the moment, I am looking at masked, dalmation, possum, verigated, veriberk and berkshires in various colors. I am hoping, in the future, to have Black, Tan, Champagne, Fawn, Blue (American and Russian), White, Chocolate and Dove colors available. I will also be looking at working with blazes and banded as well in the future, so keep your eye out for these as well. When a litter reaches 8 weeks old and we have some left from that litter, they will be listed here as available.

I am also going to be working on developing a few different and unusual lines. I will be working to create a dalmatian line, a dumbo PEW line and a Black Eyed White line. These may take a few breedings to get these lines started, but we are working on it.

I am doing a study on Soy and Rats and you can ready my blog on it as well.

I have many rescues up for adoption and will have some of my own bred rats available as well. I will try to work on getting some more pics up soon, with the internet that I was using trying to upload pics was a joke, but not that we are back with AT&T, we should be doing better.

We are also working on reorganizing our home, as we sectioned off the rat area from the rest of our home, to try to keep the little one away from the rats and our mealworms, which we are using as part of our soy free diet.

We now have space to take in both male and female rescues again. Please contact me at rescue@socialrats.com if you need to place a rat with us. If you are unable to drop the rat(s) off, then a surrender fee will apply, depending on location.  If you would be interested in adopting, please let me know at tami@socialrats.com

I have a child under 2, and she is known to stick fingers in cages, so we make sure that our rats are NEVER fed through the bars or taught that food will ever come through the bars of a cage. I have had someone ask me about fear biting, and we do everything we can to help prevent this as well. You will go home with a set of instructions, such as giving them a 24 hour cooling down period. This allows them to adjust to your home and the smells. We always ask for an email update in a few days after adoption, to make sure they are adjusting ok and that nothing has gone wrong. I do exchange rats, if you find that the rat you initially adopted does not fit your family. When you adopt from us, your adoption fee ensures you find the perfect rat, not just any rat, but the perfect rat for your family.

If you are interested in adopting, you can either email me at adoptions@socialrats.com or you can call me at 773-934-9949. I am usually available to talk anytime between 1pm and 9pm CST. My name is Tami and I am the one who runs the rattery and heads up the rescue. Our Adoption fee is $15 for 1 rat and $10 for each additional same gender rat. The proceeds of which go to help support our rescue efforts.

And, to best part, these are some of the rats that we have found homes for. These rats are not available for adoption, as they have already been adopted. I am happy to say, here is our "Book of Success"

If you are interested in adopting any of the rats pictured or seeing and learning about some of the rats we have that are not pictured here, please let me know. You can reach me at the_ratlady@yahoo.com  or at adoptions@socialrats.com  I am also willing to call you, just email me your phone number. We have more rats available for adoption than pictured, we just do not have the pics up yet.

I wanted to give everyone an idea of what Social Rats looks like, so I have posted a pictorial tour of my rattery (which is in my home) online. You can visit it by clicking Tour Our Rattery. I will be updating the tour as I change things around. It is with the help of many rat lovers, their adoption fees and the purchase of things like hammocks, food and carriers that have allowed Social Rats Rescue to continue to care for rats in need.

I want to thank everyone from my supporters to my adopters for helping to care for and find homes for rats in need. The anticipated Rat Care Guide is now complete and available for purchase for $6. Once purchased you will be taken to a direct download link. I use PayPal for your convenience.  Get a sneak preview of it here

Please keep in mind, however, that some issues may pop up, from time to time, after adoption. I count on you to inform me of these issues, otherwise I am not aware of them and can not adjust things here to make sure that those issues do not pop up again. You will have to sign an adoption agreement, which I will list on a separate page of this site, when you adopt a rat from us, no matter if it is a rescue or one that we breed.

All of our rats are held to the same standard for socialization, not just those we breed. When you adopt from Social Rats, you are adopting a Social Rat, in all aspects of the words. We have high standards for our socialization, and we do not adopt out unless a rat hits at least the lowest of our high standards. This means they do not bite, they are not going to run when you go to open the cage or get them out. We work with them to make sure they do not bite through the bars. Although some of our rats do fall through the cracks, not realizing that they do bite (with someone they are not bonded to), if you EVER have an issue with a rat you adopt from me, please let me know. I am here for the lifetime of your rat.

We put a lot of time and effort into making sure the rats we adopt out are very social. The rats we adopt are not like Pet Store or even some of the new breeders popping up in the area. We make sure our rats are social and adopt based on your needs, not ours. If a rat does not meet our standards for socialization, then it is not up for adoption. Just because a rat will allow you to hold them, does not mean they are social. Our babies are held, from day 1, until they are no longer with mom for no less than an hour a day, unless we are working with a large number of rescues at the time.
